Landmark bar shuts its doors for good, leaving 25 out of work
WRENTHAM - Tom's Tavern, a long-running and popular drinking and eating establishment, has shut its doors, with an auction of the property scheduled for next week.
The Shears Street sports bar/restaurant closed abruptly Sunday night at midnight, owner Tom Gianfrancesco confirmed Monday night.
"It's closed," Gianfrancesco said of the business he had run for just under three decades.
It wasn't the economy that has done the business in - Gianfrancesco says business has remained steady - but financial problems that stemmed from a failed sale back in 2004, he said.
"We almost had a sale complete," Gianfrancesco said.

During that pending sale that involved a verbal purchase and sales agreement, Gianfrancesco actually left for six months, but then returned to oversee the businesss that he said had by that time fallen into deep debt.
The bar/restaurant ended up in bankruptcy the next year and never was able to get back on solid financial footing despite a payment plan, Gianfrancesco said, adding Tom's Tavern did emerge from bankruptcy.
"It is my fault. It is on my shoulders. I take that responsibility," he said.
Having been Chapter 11 "did ruin our credit ability," the owner said of borrowing. "There was nowhere else to turn to."
The past few months he said he had been trying to find an investor or partner, but the sour economy had made it difficult for many.
"We had a couple of folks, but the economy hit them," Gianfrancesco said.
His son "TJ," who along with his other children had worked at Tom's Tavern, was going to take over the business in recent years but has since opened up a restaurant at the site of the former James Roadside Cafe near Franklin.
"We got to where we are at now," Gianfrancesco said. "It is just time. We have reached the end of the rope and there were no more safety nets."
The auction is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, at the tavern.
"We are going to see if we can do something at the auction," Gianfrancesco said, adding "that is just speculation right now."
About 25 employees are out of work for now.
"I kept everybody pretty much in the loop what was going on," Gianfrancesco said.
There was a send-off party two Sundays ago. "It was a combined St. Patrick's Day party. I called it a happy trails party," Gianfrancesco said.
The Wrentham resident said he pretty much knew he would have to give up the business last year. "I knew about it last year, but the goal was to get through Thanksgiving, and do some charity work, and Christmas. Then it was the Super Bowl."
Tom's Tavern delivered holiday meals to the less fortunate for years.
The business also sponsored popular road races besides donating to many causes over the years.
"I am just hoping another business in town might step up to the plate and do some of the charity work. We did a lot with the food pantry," Gianfrancesco said.
The establishment went from a small bar serving limited food with a few dozen seats to an expanded building and restaurant.
"It was just a neighborhood beer-and-shot place," Gianfrancesco recalled of when he took over, having worked at the bar previously. "We evolved from that to an institution. It took a lot of hard work and sacrifice. We have a lot to reminisce about.
"All good things come to an end. I am walking out with my head held high. We have done a lot of good things for the community, and the community has done a lot of nice things for us," Gianfrancesco added. "I met a lot of nice people. The staff has been super. It is a sad day but another chapter."

Nextelbluecross (and co.), please reconsider involving Tom's personal family matters in your blog. It's not your or anyone's place to exploit another family's circumstance. Unless you are without fault, you have no right to judge. "

What I'll always remember about Tom is that he was always there for local organizations. Whenever I went to him to ask for some help with something for King Philip Youth Football, it was ALWAYS "whatever you need" - whether gift certificates to raffle off, or food for a fundraising event. Tom often came to us to offer help without being asked, and I know from my involvement with other youth organizations that he was always there for them as well.
My lasting memory of Tom will not be at the tavern (where he always went out of his way to greet us enthusiastically when we had our coaches' meetings), but rather of him working his grill at our annual Special Olympics Pass, Punt and Kick event. Tom would come down every year, giving not only use of his grill but also his time, to help provide a barbecue lunch for close to 100 Special Olympics athletes, their families, and the football players and cheerleaders of KPYF. Every year the lunch was a highlight of the event for the parents of the Special Olympians, watching their children sit side by side with their new friends, and Tom was a big part of making that happen.
Tom, thank you again for all the help over the years. Your commitment to the youth organizations of our community shows your true character, and I'll always be proud to call you a friend. "

Sorry to see you close, I don't know Tom or his family, and I'm saddened that you had to shut your doors. I am also saddened that there are people in our community that can't read an article for what it contains, instead have to bring in gossip and acusations of their own to somehow make some sort of pointless statement. Karma's a "B#@!^" they say...... Negative, and disrespectful people need to find a hobby. "

Whenever we had to have a coaches meeting, Tom's was the venue of choice. We were always welcomed with genuine fondness by Tom.
Tom, thanks for all the support over the years. I wish things could have worked out differently, and I hope whoever takes over the site has the same sense of commitment to the community that you had. "

The Gianfrancesco's are flawed, and I had more than my fair share of dealings with several of them. But in the end, now that Tom's is done, I am glad I know them.
You can go to Chili's or the 99 and wait for bad service, or you can walk into Tom's and have you drink in your hand before you take your coat off.
I'll take the flaws of Tom and his kids over a corporate bartender any day.
If you people want to keep the traditions going, eat some great food, and have some laughs, go up the street and visit TJ and Kendra at The Black Rock!!
Or you can go to Chili's or Joe's American Bar and Grill, and be served by strangers and send your money to Boston or wherever. "

I do not know his children, nor do I need to know how many he's had, which to me is irrelivant. The place was a cool hangout, food was great, and the staff was fun. End of story. I'll be back again if it opens up.
PS hahahahaha, to cingularmasshealth, great username, great comment. "

When other nearby restaurants, closed their doors, Tom stepped up to help those with gift certificates to use them at his place, because he believed in helping others.
We see bail out and TARP funds going to big business when in fact it's little businesses like this all over America that need help, by the time money becomes available to them there will be none left.
it would have been nice to see, for example one tenth of one hundred percent in AIG bonus money come his way, and come the way of some of the other local business that are struggling as well.
He is being forced to close by the IRS, as he fell behind in his payment plan, and they add penalties and interest, in other words they let you dig a hole and than throw dirt on top of you. There is no compassion, for small business at all!
Tom you and your family will be truly missed, I hope your 25 employees are able to find something, openings are far and few now.
Godspeed, friend. "
