Aspiring North EMT charged with fire truck break-ins

ATTLEBORO - An aspiring emergency medical technician charged with breaking into fire trucks at a North Attleboro repair shop and stealing $30,000 worth of firefighting equipment was released Monday after posting $2,500 cash bail.

Jacob LaPointe, 20, of 120 Lyman St. in North Attleboro, had innocent pleas entered on his behalf at arraignment in Attleboro District Court on 10 counts of breaking and entering into motor vehicles and larceny.

His lawyer, James Perkoski of North Attleboro, said he could not comment in detail about the case because he had just received the police report at arraignment.

Perkoski described LaPointe as a "nice kid" who has no prior criminal record.

"These are merely allegations at this point," Perkoski said. LaPointe was arrested last Thursday by North Attleboro police.

In a search of his van, police recovered portable radios, fire suits and air packs allegedly stolen from fire trucks and ambulances at Greenwood Emergency Vehicles, a company that repairs and maintains the vehicles at 530 John Dietsch Blvd. in North Attleboro, police said.

The investigation started after police recovered a stolen Wrentham Fire Department portable radio during a motor vehicle stop earlier in the day.

The driver of the vehicle, Derek A. Hindle, 18, of 55 Jefferson St., Apt. 1, in North Attleboro, was charged only with one count of receiving stolen property, according to police.

Hindle is not accused of taking part in the theft and is denying any wrongdoing.

He was scheduled to be arraigned this week.

" why is all of this equipment, left on these vehicles that are out to be repaired, anyway? these vehicles, in most cases are left outdoors, and should be striped of this stolen equipment, before going for repair. not very street wise, i would say. "

" i know one of these guys, and i would ask the same question, what was he going to do with fire equipment? i know one thing, his father must be very upset, with his actions. why do people do, things, that they do? this whole situation, makes no sense to me! "

" i know both of the guys personally. i am still trying to figure out what Jake was going to do with all this fire equipment once he got it all. Like really, what are you going to do with all of it? "
